It is feasible to find a pre-1908 Winchester with a proof over the receiver, but almost nothing in plain sight about the barrel. In that scenario, I'd initially Verify the serial range for an R&R, and pull the forend to examine the bottom in the barrel.

Winchester Commemoratives ended up 1st launched in 1964, Together with the Wyoming Diamond Jubilee. Every single Commemorative was issued being a reproduction of a historically famed gun product or to honor a Range gear historically considerable individual, team, celebration or institution relating to U.S. or Canadian history.

I think about Winchester would of saved and managed the barrel chamber reamers for all the varied 271+ calibers which they produced. Along with lots of barrel blanks laying close to. That is from the 1916 brochure on the manufacturing facility’s goings-on.

Ned Schwing mentioned in his reference ebook around the Product 1890 & 1906 that Winchester started evidence marking them in 1908… I have no idea if that is exact, but will presume that it's. The “WP” proof mark was utilized after the barrel and receiver ended up mated, assembled and finished. This is extremely evident about the firearms manufactured during the late teens by early 30s when the blue flaked (popped) off if the proof was struck about the receiver body.

Receivers and barrels obtaining the “WP” in addition to the “Oval P” to the barrel would indicate a mail buy barrel equipped outside the Winchester mend shop.
